Barrier First: A Gentle Skin Protocol
A four-week, actives-free reset for sensitized skin — rebuild calm before you rebuild results.
01Week 1–2: Remove the Stressors
8 minThe subtraction phase
For two weeks: no retinoids, no acids, no vitamin C serums, no scrubs, no hot water on the face.
Keep only:
- A pH-balanced gentle cleanser, once at night
- A ceramide-based hydrating serum on damp skin
- A plain moisturizer to seal
- SPF in the morning (non-negotiable even now)
Sensitized skin is usually over-treated skin. Subtraction is the treatment.
02Week 3: Reintroduce One Thing
6 minThe +1 protocol
When tightness and reactivity have calmed for five consecutive days, reintroduce exactly one active — the one whose benefit you miss most.
Apply it two nights in the first week, not nightly. Patch test first (see the glossary entry). Give your skin seven days on that schedule before judging.
If the calm holds, that is your new baseline. If reactivity returns, the reset continues.
03Week 4: Building the Long Run
7 minThe maintenance architecture
A gentle protocol is not a diet you end — it is the frame you keep:
- AM: rinse or gentle cleanse → hydrator → moisturizer → SPF
- PM: gentle cleanse → active (if scheduled) → ceramide serum → moisturizer
- Recovery night after every active night, forever
Results in skincare are compounding, not dramatic. The routine you can sustain beats the routine that impressed you in week one.
