What is retinization?
Retinization is the adjustment period (typically 2-6 weeks) when your skin adapts to a retinoid. It is not a side effect to fear — it is the skin rebuilding its tolerance.
Common experiences
- Mild flaking or peeling (especially around the nose and mouth)
- Tightness or dryness
- Temporary worsening of texture before improvement
- Mild redness
The low-and-slow protocol
- Start at a low concentration (0.15-0.3% retinol or 0.05% retinal)
- Apply twice a week for 2 weeks
- Every other night for 2 weeks
- Nightly if tolerated
- Apply to completely dry skin (never damp — this accelerates absorption and irritation)
- Follow with moisturizer
When to slow down
Persistent burning, sustained redness, or stinging from products that never stung before means the barrier is compromised. Pause, repair with ceramides, and reintroduce at a lower frequency.
