What is the skin barrier?
The skin barrier (stratum corneum) is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it as a brick wall: the corneocytes (dead skin cells) are the bricks, and the lipid matrix (ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids) is the mortar.
Its job is simple but critical: keep water in, keep irritants out.
Signs of a compromised barrier
- Tightness or stinging after applying products
- Redness, especially around the nose and cheeks
- Flaking or peeling
- Products that never stung before suddenly stinging
- Skin that looks "dull" despite exfoliation
How to repair it
- Stop exfoliating. Pause acids and retinoids for 2-4 weeks.
- Simplify. Cleanse, moisturize, protect. Nothing else.
- Use barrier-repair ingredients. Ceramides (3:1:1 ratio), niacinamide (5%), panthenol.
- Be patient. Most barriers recover in 2-4 weeks.
